how to filter a pivot table

IN SUMMARY

Filtering a pivot table in Google Sheets allows you to focus on specific data segments, making it easier to analyze and extract insights. You can filter by rows, columns, or values, and even apply multiple filters simultaneously.

Filtering by Rows

To filter by rows, such as Sales Rep or Year, click on the 'Rows' section in the pivot table editor. Select the field you want to filter by, and a filter will be added to the corresponding row header in the pivot table. You can then choose which values to display or hide.

To clear a filter, click on the filter dropdown and select 'Show all items'. This will reset the filter and display all values for that row field.

You can apply multiple row filters simultaneously by adding multiple fields to the 'Rows' section. This allows you to filter by multiple criteria, such as Sales Rep and Year, for a more granular view of your data.

Filtering by Columns

To filter by columns, such as Ship Mode, click on the 'Columns' section in the pivot table editor. Select the field you want to filter by, and a filter will be added to the corresponding column header in the pivot table. You can then choose which values to display or hide.

To clear a filter, click on the filter dropdown and select 'Show all items'. This will reset the filter and display all values for that column field.

You can reorder the columns in your pivot table by dragging and dropping the column headers. This can be useful for organizing your data in a way that makes it easier to analyze and compare specific values.

Filtering by Values

To filter by values, such as the count or sum of sales, click on the 'Values' section in the pivot table editor. Select the field you want to filter by, and a filter will be added to the corresponding value cells in the pivot table. You can then set criteria to display only values that meet specific conditions.

Google Sheets offers various filter types for values, including number filters (greater than, less than, etc.), text filters (contains, starts with, etc.), and date filters (before, after, between, etc.). Choose the appropriate filter type based on the data you're working with.

You can combine filters from different sections (rows, columns, and values) to create a highly customized view of your data. This allows you to focus on specific segments or intersections of your data, making it easier to identify trends and patterns.
